Therefore Knowledge Management acts as a tool to help businesses reach this objective. Through Knowledge Management, it is expected that knowledge of the people are kept so that whenever it is needed, the next generation of people within the company or organization may use it. In another words, Knowledge Management allows the optimization of the company's people's knowledge while he/she is still in the company.

A Knowledge Management Consultant must be able to identify what does the company have, what kind of knowledge do they have, how can they preserve it, which knowledge are to worth preserving, and finally, how can the value of it be leveraged. Once those things are identified, Knowledge Management Consultant must be able to implement it in the organization, and make sure that the people within the organization understands the role of the Knowledge Management and are made willing to contribute to the Knowledge Management.

Knowledge Management began with online repository within the organization, which is usually accessible only within the organization's premises.
